Who Is Jesus?

Who Is Jesus? (And Why It Actually Matters)

You're asking the most important question you'll ever ask. Let's talk about it honestly.

Maybe someone handed you a card on the street. Maybe you've heard the name your whole life but never really stopped to ask the question. Maybe you're skeptical, curious, or somewhere in between.

Wherever you're coming from - you're welcome here. And the question you're asking is the most important one you'll ever ask.

So let's talk about it honestly.

He Was a Real Person

Jesus of Nazareth is one of the most documented figures in ancient history. He lived in first-century Israel, taught publicly for about three years, gathered a following, was arrested by the Roman authorities, and was executed by crucifixion around 30 AD.

Even historians who don't believe He was God agree that He existed, that He taught, and that His followers were willing to die claiming He rose from the dead. That's not a myth. That's history.

He Claimed to Be More Than a Teacher

Jesus didn't just say wise things. He made extraordinary claims about who He was.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6
"I and the Father are one." - John 10:30

These aren't the words of a good moral teacher trying to stay out of trouble. They're the words of someone claiming to be God in human form. You have to decide what to do with that.

C.S. Lewis famously wrote that Jesus leaves us only three options:

He was either...

  • A liar - He knew His claims were false but made them anyway
  • A lunatic - He genuinely believed things that weren't true
  • Lord - He was exactly who He said He was

There's no comfortable middle ground of just calling Him a good person. His claims don't allow for that.

He Backed It Up

Jesus didn't just make claims - He demonstrated them. The Gospels record Him healing the blind, the lame, and the sick. He calmed a storm with a word. He raised people from the dead.

And then, three days after His own death and burial, His tomb was empty. His disciples - frightened people who had scattered when He was arrested - suddenly became bold enough to stand in the streets of Jerusalem and declare that He was alive. Many of them were killed for it. People don't die for something they know is a lie.

The resurrection is the hinge point of everything. If it happened, it changes everything. If it didn't, none of it matters. Christians believe it happened - and there's compelling evidence to consider.

He Wasn't About Religion

One of the most surprising things about Jesus is how often He pushed back against the religious establishment of His day. He ate with tax collectors and sinners. He spoke to people society had written off. He saved His sharpest words for the religious elite who had turned faith into a performance.

His message was never about following a set of rules to earn God's approval. It was about relationship - knowing God personally, being known by Him, and being transformed from the inside out.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28

He Loves You - Right Now, As You Are

Not a cleaned-up version of you. Not future you after you've gotten your life together. You - right now, with all of it.

The entire story of the Bible is God pursuing people who keep running the other direction. Jesus is the fullest expression of that pursuit. He came all the way down - became human, lived among us, died in our place - because He wanted to be with you.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16

What Do You Do With This?

You don't have to have it all figured out. Faith starts with a single step - just being open. Keep asking questions. Keep reading. Keep showing up.

If you're curious enough to keep exploring, we'd love to walk with you. Hope City Church is a place where questions are welcome, where people are real, and where Jesus is at the center of everything.

Jesus is worth looking into.
