Nehemiah knew when to build, when to pray, and when to pause in order to protect people. Faith did not make him careless, prayer did not replace wisdom, and trust in God did not cancel responsibility. Instead, all three worked together. Nehemiah understood that following God does not mean ignoring reality, but facing it with faith, clarity, and obedience. When danger increased, he adjusted the plan, protected the people, and reminded them to remember the Lord—great and awesome. This is the kind of faith that leads well in uncertain moments.

Faith That Thinks, Prays, and Acts

Nehemiah gives us a picture of faith that is both deeply spiritual and profoundly practical.
When opposition arose, Nehemiah did not respond with panic, denial, or bravado. He did not shame the people for feeling afraid, and he did not pretend danger wasn’t real. Instead, he led with clarity, wisdom, and trust in God.
Nehemiah understood something essential:
Faith is not passive, and wisdom is not fear.
Throughout the rebuilding of the wall, Nehemiah consistently did three things—he prayed, he planned, and he acted.

Faith That Prays

Nehemiah prayed first. Prayer was not a last resort or a spiritual reflex—it was the foundation. He brought his burden, fear, and responsibility before God.
This reflects a broader biblical truth:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” — Book of Proverbs 3:5

Prayer aligns our hearts before it directs our steps. Nehemiah believed God cared not only about the wall, but about the people building it.

Faith That Thinks

After praying, Nehemiah assessed the situation honestly. He did not confuse trust in God with ignoring reality. He planned wisely. Some worked while others stood guard. Tools were held in one hand, weapons in the other.
Scripture consistently affirms this kind of wisdom:

“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.” — Proverbs 22:3

Wisdom is not the absence of faith—it is often the fruit of it.

Faith That Acts

Nehemiah did not stop at prayer and planning. He acted with courage and clarity, reminding the people:

“Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome.” — Book of Nehemiah 4:14

Faith that never moves is not biblical faith. Scripture tells us plainly:

“Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” — Book of James 2:17

Holding It All Together

Nehemiah models a faith that is whole. Not reckless. Not fearful. Integrated.
Jesus Himself taught this balance:

“Which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost?” — Gospel of Matthew 14:28

Planning is not unbelief. It is stewardship.

This kind of faith matters deeply for us today.
We live in a world that pushes us toward extremes. One extreme tells us faith means ignoring reality and pressing forward no matter the cost. The other tells us caution means we don’t trust God.
Nehemiah shows us a better way.

Biblical faith:

Thinks clearly

Prays deeply

Acts wisely

Nehemiah never confused recklessness with courage. He understood that protecting people was not a distraction from God’s work—it was part of God’s work.
There are seasons when God calls us to advance boldly.
There are seasons when God calls us to pause and protect.
Both require faith.
Scripture reminds us:

“The steps of a good person are ordered by the Lord.” — Book of Psalms 37:23

Obedience sometimes looks like moving forward.
Sometimes it looks like waiting.
Sometimes it looks like adjusting the plan without abandoning the mission.
Nehemiah teaches us that God’s purposes are not fragile. They are not threatened by delays, interruptions, or changed schedules. What matters most is not how fast the wall goes up—but that the people remain whole, unified, and faithful along the way.
This is faith that thinks.
This is faith that prays.
This is faith that acts.
And this is the kind of faith God honors.

Personal Examination

Take a few quiet moments and consider:

Where has God called me to build in this season?

Am I feeling pressure to force something God may be asking me to steward wisely?

Is there an area where God is inviting me to trust Him without rushing ahead?

Nehemiah shows us that God’s work is never threatened by a pause—but people can be harmed by impatience.

Even though we aren’t gathering in person today, ministry continues, and generosity remains a powerful way we worship God.
If you would like to give online today, you can do so safely and securely at the link below. That maybe you’re just supposed to "tough it out" indefinitely?
Let’s tackle this head-on with biblical clarity, because the statement “Lack is not God’s will for your life” is more than a positive affirmation—it’s a truth deeply rooted in Scripture.

What Is Lack, Biblically Speaking?
“Lack” is more than just not having money. In the Bible, lack can show up as:

Financial poverty (not enough resources)

Emotional or relational brokenness

Spiritual emptiness

Even purpose-deficiency—feeling stuck and without direction

But here's the key: Not all lack is the same. The Bible distinguishes between temporary lack for testing or growth, and persistent lack that results from disobedience, broken mindsets, or the curse of sin.

God’s Original Design Was Abundance
Let’s rewind to the beginning. In Genesis 1–2, Adam and Eve were placed in Eden—a garden overflowing with provision, beauty, and relationship.

“Be fruitful and multiply… fill the earth and subdue it.” (Gen. 1:28)

There was no lack in the garden. No bills, no broken dreams, no stress. God designed us to walk in fruitfulness, not survival.

✅ Bottom Line: Lack was not part of the original plan.
How Did Lack Enter the Picture?
Genesis 3 tells us the tragic story of sin entering the world. With it came pain, scarcity, toil, and frustration.

“Cursed is the ground because of you… by the sweat of your brow you will eat…” (Gen. 3:17–19)

What changed? Sin broke the flow of divine abundance. Lack was never God’s desire—it was a consequence of rebellion.
The Covenant Equation: Obedience = Provision
Throughout the Old Testament, especially in Deuteronomy 28, we see this principle:

Obedience brought blessing: abundant crops, safety, health, prosperity.

Disobedience brought lack: failed harvests, famine, poverty, and oppression.

God’s message was consistent: Walk in My ways, and I will provide for you.
Jesus Came to Break the Power of Lack
Enter Jesus.

“I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

Jesus didn’t come just to get us to heaven. He came to restore what was lost in Eden—including Kingdom provision.
From feeding 5,000 with a lunchbox to paying taxes with a coin from a fish’s mouth, Jesus modeled a life of supernatural supply and trust in the Father.

“Seek first the Kingdom… and all these things will be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33)

✝️ The Early Church Lived in Abundance (Even in Trials)
The book of Acts paints a radical picture:

“There was not a needy person among them.” (Acts 4:34)

Even in the midst of persecution, the early believers shared, gave, and experienced miraculous provision. Why? Because they understood Kingdom generosity breaks lack.
⚠️ When God Allows Lack (But Doesn’t Author It)
Sometimes, God does allow temporary lack, but always for a purpose:

Testing or Training – to shape character and deepen trust (Deut. 8:2)

Correction – to realign our hearts (Haggai 1:6–7)

Suffering for the Gospel – to glorify Christ (2 Cor. 4:17)

These seasons are real—but they are not meant to define your life.
The Battle Starts in the Mind
Lack often begins as a mindset long before it manifests in the bank account. If the enemy can convince you that you're stuck, forgotten, or unworthy—he’s already stolen your faith.
The antidote? Sonship. Identity. Covenant. You are not an orphan scraping by—you are a child of the King.
Declare it:

“I am not defined by lack—I’m defined by covenant.”
“Jehovah Jireh is not a metaphor. He is my Provider.”

Final Conclusion: God’s Will Is Abundance with Purpose
Here’s the truth, plain and simple:

Persistent, generational, identity-based lack is NOT God’s will for your life.

Yes, there may be seasons of stretching. Yes, faith may be tested. But your final state is not barely-getting-by—it’s overflowing with enough to glorify God, bless others, and advance His Kingdom.

Practical Takeaway:
You can begin to break lack by:

Shifting your mindset to match God’s promises

Speaking declarations of provision daily

Practicing radical stewardship and generosity

Trusting God’s timing, but never accepting lack as permanent

It’s time to go from survival to supernatural sufficiency.

Question for You:
What’s one area of your life where you’ve tolerated lack as “normal”? What’s one scripture you’ll declare over it this week?

Drop your thoughts or testimonies in the comments—I’d love to hear from you!

Devotionals

One of the most cherished traditions we have is the Agape Feast, a beautiful gathering where we take communion together around tables, followed by a shared potluck meal. This event is a time of reflection, gratitude, and joyful fellowship as we celebrate the love of Christ and the bond we share as a church family.

What is an Agape Meal?

The Agape Meal, historically known as a Love Feast, is rooted in the early Christian church. The word ‘Agape’ is derived from the Greek word for unconditional love, the kind of love God has for His people. This meal expresses the sharing, belonging, and fellowship we experience with one another as followers of Christ.

A Tradition of Love and Unity

In the early church, believers would gather in homes, share a meal, and partake in communion, emphasizing their unity in Christ. Now, let’s explore how you can discover which gifts God has given you and how you can begin using them to serve others.

1 Peter 4:10 (NIV):
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms."

How to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts

The first step in walking in your spiritual gifts is discovering what they are. Here are a few ways to start:

Prayer: Ask God to reveal the gifts He’s given you. The Holy Spirit loves to guide us as we seek to serve Him.

Step Out in Faith: Often, we discover our gifts by serving. Volunteer for different ministries, and see what feels like a natural fit.

Ask Others: Sometimes, those around us can see our gifts more clearly than we can. Ask fellow believers what gifts they’ve noticed in you.

Romans 12:6 (NIV):
"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith."

Using Your Gifts in the Church

Once you've discovered your spiritual gifts, the next step is to put them into action. Spiritual gifts aren’t meant to lie dormant—they are meant to be actively used for the building up of the church and the advancement of God's Kingdom. Here are a few ways you can begin using your gifts in the church and beyond:

A. Serving in Ministries That Align with Your Gifts
Every church has numerous ministries where your gifts can make a huge difference. Whether you have the gift of teaching, hospitality, healing, or leadership, there are countless opportunities for you to serve. For example:

Teaching or Wisdom: You might serve as a Bible study leader or Sunday school teacher, helping others understand God’s Word.

Hospitality: You could join the hospitality team, welcoming new members and visitors with warmth and care.

Healing or Mercy: If you have a compassionate heart, you might serve in prayer ministry, visiting the sick, or being part of the church's outreach to those in need.

At Hope City Church, we believe that everyone has a place to serve, and we encourage you to seek out ministries that resonate with the gifts God has placed in you.

B. Using Your Gifts to Support Others
Spiritual gifts are not just for ministry within church walls—they are for blessing and supporting those around you in everyday life. If you have the gift of discernment, you might find yourself helping friends and family navigate difficult decisions. If you have the gift of encouragement, speaking life and hope into someone's situation might be exactly what they need.
God calls us to use our gifts not only to serve within the church but also to make an impact in our communities, workplaces, and homes. Wherever you are, your spiritual gifts can bring God’s love, truth, and power to those who need it.

C. Collaborating with Other Believers
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to each of us in different measures and for different purposes. This is why collaboration with others in the body of Christ is so vital. Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 that the church is like a body—many different parts, each with its own function, working together to form one whole.
When you use your gifts alongside other believers, you can experience the full power of community and ministry. For example, someone with the gift of prophecy might work together with those who have the gift of discernment to interpret and apply a prophetic word. Someone with the gift of administration can help organize ministries led by others with the gift of leadership. These gifts are listed in several places in the New Testament, including 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, and Ephesians 4. Some of the gifts include:

Wisdom – The ability to apply knowledge and insight in spiritual matters.

Knowledge – Supernatural understanding of truths about God or situations.

Faith – Extraordinary confidence in God’s power and promises.

Healing – The ability to bring physical, emotional, or spiritual healing to others.

Miracles – The ability to perform acts of supernatural power.

Prophecy – Receiving and delivering messages from God to His people.

Discernment – The ability to distinguish between different spirits and understand God’s will.

Speaking in Tongues – Speaking in unknown languages for prayer or ministry purposes.

Interpretation of Tongues – The ability to understand and interpret messages spoken in tongues.

These gifts are given to us by God’s grace, not because of our merit, and they are meant to serve the church and advance His Kingdom.

Why Are the Gifts of the Spirit Important Today?

Some people believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were only meant for the early church, but at Hope City Church, we believe they are just as relevant and essential today as they were then. Why? Because the same Holy Spirit who empowered the early believers is still moving and working in the church today.
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are vital for:

Building Up the Church: The gifts are meant to strengthen and encourage the body of Christ. When believers operate in their gifts, the church grows spiritually, and its members are encouraged.

Evangelism: The gifts of the Spirit are powerful tools for sharing the gospel. For example, a word of knowledge or healing can open someone’s heart to the reality of God’s love.

Spiritual Warfare: We live in a world where we face both physical and spiritual challenges. Prayer is the heartbeat of the Christian life. It’s our direct line of communication with God, a source of strength, and a way to align our hearts with His will. But how can we cultivate a prayer-filled life in today’s busy world? One of the greatest examples of a life grounded in prayer is found in the early church. In Acts, we see how the first Christians prayed continuously and fervently, witnessing incredible miracles and divine intervention. Let’s explore what we can learn from them and apply to our lives today.

1. Consistent and Devoted Prayer:
In Acts 2:42, we read that the early believers “devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Prayer wasn’t just something they did occasionally; it was a regular, integral part of their lives.
We can adopt this devotion by setting aside intentional time for prayer each day. Whether it’s in the morning, during lunch breaks, or before bed, consistency is key to building a strong prayer life. Start with a few minutes and gradually extend that time as you grow more comfortable in conversation with God.
Practical Tip: Create a prayer schedule or set a daily reminder to help keep you accountable. Dedicate time for both personal prayer and prayer with others, just as the early church did.

2. Praying in Unity:
The early church gathered regularly for corporate prayer, especially during times of need. One powerful example is in Acts 12, where the church came together to pray for Peter’s release from prison. God responded to their unified prayers by sending an angel to free Peter.
When we pray together as a community, we tap into the power of agreement. Jesus said in Matthew 18:19, “If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.” This emphasizes the importance of praying with others.
Practical Tip:
Join a prayer group or start one with a few close friends. Make it a habit to pray not only for your own needs but also for the needs of your community and the world around you. Corporate prayer brings unity and strengthens the body of Christ.

3. Praying Boldly and Expectantly:
The early church prayed with boldness, expecting God to move in miraculous ways. In Acts 4:31, after Peter and John had been threatened for preaching the gospel, the believers prayed, and “the place where they were meeting was shaken.” They didn’t pray small prayers; they prayed with faith and boldness, expecting God to do the impossible.
We, too, are called to pray bold, faith-filled prayers. When we pray, we should trust that God is listening and is able to act according to His will. James 5:16 reminds us that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Practical Tip:
When you pray, believe that God is hearing you. Ask for big things according to His will and trust in His power to accomplish them. Keep a prayer journal to track how God answers your prayers over time.

4. Praying in All Circumstances:
The early Christians prayed in every situation, whether in times of celebration, persecution, or need. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to “pray without ceasing.” This doesn’t mean we have to be on our knees 24/7, but we can maintain a posture of prayer throughout our day—turning to God in every moment.
By praying in all circumstances, we develop a habit of staying connected to God, regardless of what’s happening in our lives. Whether things are going well or we're facing challenges, prayer keeps us rooted in God's presence.
Practical Tip:
Incorporate prayer into your daily activities. Pray during your commute, while doing chores, or even in brief moments of silence. Keep God involved in every aspect of your day-to-day life.

5. Trusting God’s Timing:
The early church trusted God even when answers didn’t come immediately. Sometimes, their prayers were answered quickly, like Peter’s release from prison. Other times, they had to wait, but they remained steadfast in their faith.
As we cultivate a prayer-filled life, it’s important to remember that God’s timing is perfect. Delayed answers aren’t denials—they are opportunities for us to grow in faith, patience, and trust in His plan.
Practical Tip:
When answers don’t come right away, stay persistent in prayer. Ask God for the grace to trust Him during the waiting season, knowing that His timing is always best.

Conclusion: The early church gives us a powerful example of what a prayer-filled life looks like. By praying consistently, in unity, with boldness, in all circumstances, and trusting God’s timing, we can deepen our relationship with Him and experience His presence in our everyday lives. At Hope City Church, we are committed to fostering a culture of prayer, and we invite you to join us as we seek God together.
Call to Action: Looking to grow in your prayer life? Join one of our prayer groups, attend our next prayer night, or start your own prayer journey today. We would love to pray with you and stand with you as you experience the power of prayer firsthand.

At Hope City Church, we believe that life is better together. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel disconnected or isolated, but God has designed us for community. Small groups are the heart of our church, where people come together to grow spiritually, build authentic relationships, and support each other through life’s ups and downs.

Why Small Groups?

Building Genuine Relationships:
At the core of small groups is the opportunity to form deep, meaningful relationships. Sunday services are powerful, but true connection often happens in smaller settings. Small groups allow you to move beyond surface-level conversations and foster friendships that can last a lifetime. These groups provide a safe space to be open, share struggles, and receive encouragement.
Testimonial idea:
"Before joining a small group at Hope City Church, I felt alone in my faith. Now, I have a group of friends who pray for me, encourage me, and hold me accountable. I can't imagine my life without them!" - Sarah, Small Group Member

Spiritual Growth Together:
Spiritual growth doesn’t happen in isolation. Small groups are where we dig deeper into God's Word, share insights, ask questions, and learn from each other. Together, we explore the Bible, apply its truths to our daily lives, and encourage one another to grow closer to Jesus.
At Hope City Church, our small groups are designed to foster spiritual maturity by studying scripture, discussing sermons, and praying together. Whether you're new to the faith or a seasoned believer, there is always room to grow, and small groups provide the perfect environment for that.

Support During Life’s Challenges:
Life is full of unexpected challenges, and we aren’t meant to face them alone. When trials come—whether health issues, financial troubles, or personal struggles—your small group becomes your support system. They stand by you, offering prayer, help, and encouragement. Knowing you have a community to lean on makes all the difference in difficult times.
Testimonial idea:
"When I was going through a rough season, my small group rallied around me with prayer and practical support. They were the hands and feet of Jesus during a time when I needed it most." - John, Small Group Member

Serving Together:
Another key aspect of small groups at Hope City is service. We believe that faith is best expressed through action, and our small groups regularly engage in outreach projects and community service. Whether it's helping at a local food bank, organizing a neighborhood clean-up, or partnering with local ministries, small groups provide an avenue to serve God by serving others.

A Place to Belong:
At its core, a small group is about belonging. It’s about being known and loved as you are. No matter your background, story, or where you are in your faith journey, there’s a place for you in a small group. At Hope City Church, we believe that every person matters, and in small groups, you’ll find people who genuinely care for you.

How to Join a Small Group at Hope City:
We have small groups meeting throughout the week, both in-person and online, to accommodate different schedules and preferences. Whether you're interested in a group based on a specific life stage, area of interest, or spiritual growth, there's a group for you.
You can sign up by visiting our website, checking out the sign-up sheets at the church, or speaking with one of our leaders who can help you find the perfect group for you.
Conclusion:
Don’t do life alone. Join a small group at Hope City Church, where you’ll find a community of believers ready to walk with you, support you, and grow with you. Life is better in community, and small groups are where life-changing connections happen.
